VIDEO EXCLUSIVE: Team USA Women’s Basketball Coach Cheryl Reeve On Global Growth Of Women’s Basketball

Head coach of the Team USA women’s basketball team, Cheryl Reeve, has observed a shift in the landscape of women’s basketball globally. With the increasing popularity of college basketball and the WNBA, Reeve believes that this enthusiasm will inevitably spill over to international competitions.

“It seems inevitable that USA basketball would benefit from the hype of the college season,” Reeve told uSports in May. “The WNBA is going to experience that sort of spillover of enthusiasm. And so, it’s inevitable that if you’re watching the WNBA, when we break for the Olympics, you’re going to want to watch those very players that you just saw competing in the W on the world stage.”

This surge in interest is not just confined to the United States. Reeve notes that the level of competition has become more intense, with no guarantees of easy victories for Team USA. “I don’t think there’s any forgone conclusion about our competition. I think maybe in years past, it was about how badly a team could beat another team. But there’s no forgone conclusion; this is going to be a challenge. And I think people will be very interested,” she said.

The growth of women’s basketball worldwide has been remarkable, with more countries investing in their women’s teams and the sport gaining traction in regions previously less engaged. This global expansion has led to a more competitive environment, elevating the quality of play and drawing in new fans.
