On Monday, Ariel Young‘s aunt announced that the 5-year old girl injured in a car crash involving the son of Kansas City Chiefs coach Andy Reid has awakened from a coma.
“Ariel is awake,” Tiffany Verhulst wrote on the GoFundMe page that features updates from the family on Ariel’s condition. The GoFundMe is designated for Ariel’s medical expenses and had collected more than $480,000 as of Tuesday morning. However, the page offered no further updates about the girl’s condition.
Ariel had been hospitalized since the crash on February 4 in which a truck driven by Britt Reid collided with two cars, one that had run out of gas near Arrowhead Stadium and one that stopped to help. Young and a four-year-old child were sitting in the second car.
Reid was the outside linebacker coach for the Chiefs at the time of the crash, but he was placed on leave for the rest of his contract, which has since expired. Reid is currently under investigation by Kansas City, Missouri police.

Reid, 35, told police that he consumed at least two drinks before driving his truck on the day of the crash. He also told police that he has a prescription for the drug Adderall.
Additionally, the Kansas City Star’s court documents revealed that police collected blood from Reid at the time of the accident. A field sobriety test was conducted at the scene and again at the hospital where Reid was taken. An officer reported observing “four clues of impairment.”
Britt Reid’s father, Andy Reid, discussed the crash following the Chiefs’ loss in Super Bowl LV.
“My heart goes out to all those involved in the accident, in particular the family with the little girl fighting for her life,” he told reporters. “I can’t comment on it any more than I am here, so the questions you have, I am going to have to turn those down at the time.”
“But just from a human standpoint— man, my heart bleeds for everyone involved in that.”
