U.S. Men’s Soccer Team Fails To Qualify For Olympics For Third Consecutive Time
The U.S. Men’s Soccer Team has failed to qualify for the Olympics again. The failure means that the U.S. men’s team will miss out on its third consecutive Olympic games. The team last played in the 2008 Olympics. It becomes the longest drought for the team in over 50 years.
The U.S. Men’s team had an opportunity to take the final spot for the Tokyo Olympics, and all they had to do was get past Honduras. However, it proved to be a difficult obstacle for the Americans. The first half was close with the U.S. being stopped by the Honduran defenders. It was right before the half when Honduras broke the stalemate with the first goal of the game.
Two minutes into the second half, U.S. goalkeeper David Ochoa made a costly mistake that led to a goal for Honduras. Ochoa received a pass to his side and tried to pass it to his teammate when Honduras forward Luis Palma came between the pass and kicked it off his leg. The ball bounced into the net for another Honduras goal.
The U.S. was now down 2-0 in the game, but team captain Jackson Yueill took matters into his own hand to score the team’s lone goal of the match. In the 52nd minute mark, the captain scored a shot from outside the penalty box to lift up the team.
The U.S. tried their best to come back but failed to convert any opportunities to tie the game. The final score was 2-1.
“We’re devastated,” U.S. coach Jason Kreis said.
The Men’s national team last played in the 2008 Olympics. The last time the team has missed three Olympic appearances was back in 1960, 1964 and 1968.
