On Monday, two reporters shared images of the New England Patriots quarterback’s gruesome thumb injury — sustained during the playoffs — before he received stitches.

The injury is also shown in the web documentary series Tom vs. Time, which chronicles both Brady’s personal and professional life.

Nick O’Malley of MassLive.com shared a much bloodier image:

Brady, 40, suffered the injury after colliding with running back Rex Burkhead’s helmet during practice before the AFC Championship Game against the Jacksonville Jaguars.

The Patriots won that game but then lost to the Philadelphia Eagles in Super Bowl LII, despite Brady’s record-setting 505 passing yards and three touchdowns.

The quarterback also appeared on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert on Monday night, where he chugged a beer, ate his first-ever strawberry and discussed Tom vs. Time as well as his new book The TB12 Method. Brady also explained what he was feeling the day after this year’s Super Bowl loss.

“When you wake up the next morning, its like: ‘Was that a nightmare? Please, we can play this game again!” Brady said of his team’s defeat.
