Three Suspects Still In Custody After Super Bowl Parade Shooting In Kansas City

The shooting that occurred during the Kansas City Chiefs’ Super Bowl parade Tuesday, killing one person and injuring more than 20, reportedly began because of an argument in a large crowd. A report Thursday found that roughly half of the victims injured were children.

“We are truly saddened by the senseless act of violence that occurred outside of Union Station at the conclusion of today’s parade and rally,” the Kansas City Chiefs said in a statement Thursday. “Our hearts go out to the victims, their families, and all of Kansas City.”

The investigation into the incident, which occurred shortly after the celebratory rally ended, is still ongoing, as three people remain in police custody but have not yet been charged. Two of the individuals are juveniles.

Video footage of the incident seems to suggest that it took place near Union Station in downtown Kansas City, a densely populated area of the city and central hub for the rally.

During a scramble following the gunfire, two people were captured on camera tackling an individual who was fleeing. Many have speculated that these people were attempting to apprehend a potential shooter. Authorities eventually arrived and detained the individual.

Lisa Lopez-Galvan, a popular local radio host, is currently considered to be the only person who died in the shooting, though eight of the 22 reported victims were sent to nearby hospitals in critical condition. The youngest victim is reportedly 8 years old.

In an interview with local news station KSHB 41 Thursday, Kansas City Mayor Quinton Lucas said that the incident impacted him significantly. He apologized for a statement he made Wednesday in which he attempted to highlight the security measures in place at the parade. On Thursday, he admitted that the city failed to protect its citizens.

“We let down a lot of people, my family included,” Lucas said. “And, I think we’ll continue to try to do more, 30% pay raise increase for police officers, any number of things, but when a fool can show up at a rally with a gun, and one that can fire pretty rapidly, then I don’t know if we’ll ever be able to be fully safe from all of this.”
