The Athletics are in last place in the AL West, and 10 games back from a wild-card spot.

The Athletics finished the 2024 season with a 69-93 record, placing fourth in the AL West. 2024 was also the last season the organization spent in Oakland.

The Athletics are currently playing home games in Sacramento as the team awaits its move to Las Vegas, scheduled for 2028.

In the offseason, the Athletics made moves to help compete in more games by signing starting pitcher Luis Severino and third baseman Gio Urshela. The Athletics also extended designated hitter Brent Rooker and traded for starting pitcher Jeffrey Springs from the Tampa Bay Rays.

After the first six weeks of the season, the Athletics were 20-18 and looked like contenders in the AL West. Shortly after, the team went on a 1-20 stretch, which ended its hopes of contending in 2025.

The Athletics’ offense has been a surprise during the 2025 season, led by Nick Kurtz, Jacob Wilson, and Rooker.

The Athletics rank in the top 10 for slugging percentage and home runs, and are in the top half of the league for batting average. However, the team ranks in the bottom 10 for strikeouts and in the bottom half of the league for on-base percentage.

The pitching has been a weakness, led by Springs and Severino.

The Athletics give up the most home runs and rank in the bottom three for ERA. The team is also in the bottom five for walks and hits per inning pitched (WHIP), as well as batting average allowed, and is in the bottom half of the league for strikeouts.

Due to the team being in last place in the AL West, the Athletics have been sellers at this year’s trade deadline. The Athletics traded Mason Miller, arguably the best relief pitcher in baseball, and JP Sears to the San Diego Padres for their No. 1, No. 3, No. 13 and No. 17 prospects.

While the Athletics are selling and won’t be competing for the rest of the season, Kurtz and Wilson have been tremendous for rookies.

On July 25, Kurtz went 6-6 with four home runs in a 15-3 victory over the Houston Astros. During the historic game, Kurtz became the first rookie in MLB history to hit four home runs in a single game, the second player to go 6-6 with four home runs, and he tied the MLB record for total bases in a single game.

Despite the losing season, the Athletics are in a strong position moving forward, thanks to Kurtz, Wilson, and the top prospects from the Padres.
