MUNICH, GERMANY - SEPTEMBER 30: Thomas Müller of FC Bayern Muenchen reacts during the Supercup 2020 match between FC Bayern München and Borussia Dortmund at Allianz Arena on September 30, 2020 in Munich, Germany.

Liverpool and Porto both qualified for the next round of the UEFA Champions League competition.

Liverpool defeated Ajax, 1-0 after a goal from Curtis Jones in the second half. Meanwhile, Porto played a goalless fixture against Manchester City, which still secured its place in the last 16 of the competition.

After Liverpool’s qualification, it will be a tight race between Atalanta and Ajax. Atalanta faced Midtjylland and the game ended with a draw. Midtjylland’s Alexander Scholz scored an early goal and in the second half, Atalanta’s Cristian Romero scored the equalizer.

La Liga giants Real Madrid failed to qualify after suffering a defeat against Shakhtar Donetsk, 2-0. In the second half, Shakhtar Donetsk’s Dentinho scored the first goal followed by a goal from Manor Solomon in the last minutes of the game. After this surprise defeat, Real Madrid is currently at risk of not qualifying for the last 16 of the competition.

After a defeat against Real Madrid last week, Inter Milan defeated Borussia Monchengladbach, 3-2. In the first half, Milan’s Matteo Darmian scored an early goal followed by a goal from Borussia Monchengladbach’s Alassane Plea. In the second half, Inter Milan’s Romelu Lukaku scored two goals and Plea scored one. Borussia Monchengladbach also had a disallowed goal, which would have been an equalizer.

Atletico Madrid also has to wait to secure a place in the last 16 of the competition after a draw against reigning champions Bayern Munich. In the first half, Atletico’s young star Joao Felix scored the first goal. In the dying minutes of the game, Bayern Munich was awarded a penalty, which Thomas Muller scored.

Ligue 1 club Marseille ended their losing streak in the competition after defeating Greek club Olympiacos, 2-1. In the first half, Olympiacos’ Mady Camara scored the game’s first goal. In the second half, Marseille was awarded two penalties, which Dimitri Payet scored.

Portuguese club Porto defeated Roma 3-0 in the second leg of their Champions League playoff in Rome on Tuesday to advance to the group stage of the competition on a 4-1 aggregate and send the Serie A club crashing into the second-tier Europa League group stage instead.

Roma were the favorites after tying 1-1 in Portugal, but fell behind after Felipe gave the visitors an early lead. The Italians fell apart as Daniele de Rossi and Emerson Palmieri were given straight red cards, one in each half of the game.

De Rossi was sent off in the 39th minute for stepping on Maxi Pereira, and then Emerson was ejected in the 50th.

Felipe, who scored an own goal in the opening leg match with Roma to cause the draw, headed home off a free kick in the eighth minute for a 1-0 Porto lead.

As Roma desperately attempted to score with the two-man disadvantage, Porto continued its unrelenting strike. Mexican defender Miguel Layun, 28, rounded onrushing goalie Wojciech Szczesny and fired into an empty net to give Porto a 2-0 lead in the 73rd minute.

Two minutes later, Layun’s compatriot, 23-year-old winger Jesus ‘Tecatito’ Corona kicked a high shot from just a few feet away from the goal, on the left side of the box to seal the 3-0 victory.

Porto now awaits Thursday’s Champions League draw, which will determine its fate for the next stage of the tournament.

Roma are the third Serie A team in consecutive years to lose in the play-off round, thus leaving Juventus and Napoli to represent Italy in Thursday’s group-stage draw.

In Tuesday’s other four Champions League playoff second legs:

Monaco 1-0 Villarreal (Monaco through on a 3-1 aggregate)

Viktoria Plzen 2-2 Ludogorets (Ludogorets through on a 4-2 aggregate)

Legia Warsaw 1-1 Dundalk (Legia Warsaw through on a 3-1 aggregate)

Hapoel Be’er Sheva 2-0 Celtic (Celtic through on a 5-4 aggregate)
