Ariel Young, the five-year-old girl injured in a car crash involving former Kansas City Chiefs assistant coach Britt Reid likely has permanent brain damage.

On Tuesday, Tom Porto, the lawyer for the family gave an update about Young’s condition. During an interview on the show Good Morning America, Porto talked about the severity of the crash. Porto first gave good news saying that Young is awake. However, the lawyer then said, “Likely she has permanent brain damage that she will endure for the rest of her life. She’s not walking.”

On February 4, Reid hit two vehicles on the side of a highway entrance ramp with his truck. The crash injured Young, her mother, aunt, and four-year-old cousin inside one of the cars. Young’s family parked their car at the side to help a 19-year-old relative whose car ran out of gas. The four-year-old and the two adults in the second car suffered non-life-threatening injuries.

Reid was said to have been “driving at highway speeds when his pickup truck struck the first car.” Additionally, Police have said that Reid’s breathe reeked of a moderate odor of alcoholic beverages. Reid told officers that he drank two or three beverages.

The family lawyer is seeking to punish the former assistant coach. “We’re going to be advocating for the most serious charges and the most serious sentence that Britt could ever receive.”

On Monday, Ariel Young‘s aunt announced that the 5-year old girl injured in a car crash involving the son of Kansas City Chiefs coach Andy Reid has awakened from a coma.

“Ariel is awake,” Tiffany Verhulst wrote on the GoFundMe page that features updates from the family on Ariel’s condition. The GoFundMe is designated for Ariel’s medical expenses and had collected more than $480,000 as of Tuesday morning. However, the page offered no further updates about the girl’s condition.

Ariel had been hospitalized since the crash on February 4 in which a truck driven by Britt Reid collided with two cars, one that had run out of gas near Arrowhead Stadium and one that stopped to help. Young and a four-year-old child were sitting in the second car.

Reid was the outside linebacker coach for the Chiefs at the time of the crash, but he was placed on leave for the rest of his contract, which has since expired. Reid is currently under investigation by Kansas City, Missouri police.

Reid, 35, told police that he consumed at least two drinks before driving his truck on the day of the crash. He also told police that he has a prescription for the drug Adderall.

Additionally, the Kansas City Star’s court documents revealed that police collected blood from Reid at the time of the accident. A field sobriety test was conducted at the scene and again at the hospital where Reid was taken. An officer reported observing “four clues of impairment.”

Britt Reid’s father, Andy Reid, discussed the crash following the Chiefs’ loss in Super Bowl LV.

“My heart goes out to all those involved in the accident, in particular the family with the little girl fighting for her life,” he told reporters. “I can’t comment on it any more than I am here, so the questions you have, I am going to have to turn those down at the time.”

“But just from a human standpoint— man, my heart bleeds for everyone involved in that.”

The Kansas City Chiefs have announced that offensive line coach Britt Reid has been placed on administrative leave. Reid was involved in a car crash that left a five-year-old and a four-year-old injured.

The team released a statement. “We remain in the process of gathering information on the incident, and we will continue to assist local authorities as requested,” the statement read. “Our focus remains on Ariel Young and her family.” The team acknowledged that they have reached out to the family. “We have reached out to the family to offer our support and resources to them during this difficult time, and we will continue to pray for her recovery.”

Reid is the oldest son of Chiefs head coach Andy Reid. The OL coach was involved in a car crash that occurred on the night of February 4. The police reported that the coach’s truck hit a car that was out of gas and hit another car. The second car that was hit was driven by relatives of the first car’s driver. A woman in the second car told police that she crawled out of the car and told the coach to call 911 because she lost her phone in the crash.

When police arrived, they used a search warrant and found that the Chiefs OL coach had bloodshot eyes and smelt of alcohol. When officers asked if he had been drinking, Reid confirmed he had “2-3 drinks.”

Reid’s cellphone was seized by the officers, as they determine if he had used it before crashing. The crash left a five-year-old critically wounded, and a four-year-old with non-life threatening injuries.

Reid has had legal and drug issues in the past. In 2007, a judge called the OL coach an “addict” and called Reid’s home a “drug emporium” before sentencing him and his brother, Garrett Reid, to jail.
