Stephen Curry To Play In Web.com Tour’s Ellie Mae Classic In August

Stephen Curry may have just helped lead the Golden State Warriors to an NBA championship, but he will next participate in a golf competition at the end of this summer.

Steph Curry Will Play with a 2-Handicap In the Tournament In Hayward, California

It was announced Wednesday that the 29-year-old point guard will play in the Ellie Mae Classic as part of Web.com Tour. The tournament will be held Aug. 3-6 at TPC Stonebrae in Hayward, California.

“Golf has always been a passion of mine,” Curry — a two-time NBA MVP — said in a statement. “It’s a dream come true to get the chance to play inside the ropes amongst the pros in a PGA Tour-sanctioned tournament.”

The Ellie Mae Classic — which has taken place at Stonebrae since 2009 — is part of the PGA Tour’s developmental circuit. The Warriors Community Foundation is its primary charity beneficiary.

Curry will retain his current amateur status for the event and will be competing on an unrestricted sponsor exemption and with a 2.0 handicap.

“When I found out I was getting a sponsor exemption, I had a lot of emotions because I love to play golf; it’s a passion of mine,” Curry said in a pre-recorded message released on Wednesday morning. “But to be able to play against the next and best golf professionals will be a huge honor and huge treat.”

The point guard previously delighted PGA Tour fans at the Safeway Open Pro-Am last fall. He also shot a 70 at Pebble Beach in June 2015.

Curry’s love of golf is well-known, as he has admitted to occasionally daydreaming about the sport on the Warriors sideline during timeouts. He has played several rounds with former president Barack Obama and he played 18 holes at Augusta National last year alongside teammate Andre Iguodala. However, this will be his first time playing in an official golf tournament.

“I’m looking forward to hopefully not embarrassing myself, but mostly having a lot of fun and hopefully raising a lot of money for the foundation,” he said of the Ellie Mae Classic. “I’m going to try to keep it in the fairway.”

Curry continued: “Sometimes off the tee, I don’t know where it’s going. Rarely do you see them hit anywhere close to a bad shot of mine,” he said. “It’s fun to watch how easy it seems when they get in their zone.”

Besides Curry, other professional athletes who have competed in PGA Tour-sanctioned tournaments during their active playing careers include former NFL players Jerry Rice and Mark Rypien.
