Richard Sherman Pays Off School Kids’ $7,000 Cafeteria Debt On Thanksgiving

San Francisco 49ers cornerback Richard Sherman was in a giving mood on Thanksgiving as he donated money to pay off a school’s cafeteria debt. This comes just days after he was named the NFLPA Community MVP. Sherman took to Cabrillo Middle School in Santa Clara and wrote a personal check for $7,491.27 to wipe out the school’s cafeteria bill. In response, he said, “The last thing any child should have to worry about is being able to afford eating breakfast and lunch.” This was met with applause and gratitude from local school officials in Northern California as about 60 students will benefit from this donation.

Sherman is no stranger to giving back to local schools. Just last month he wrote a $20,000 check to the Tacoma Public Schools in Washington to relieve their students’ lunch debt.

The NFLPA Community MVP program recognizes NFL players who make positive impacts to their local communities. Each week during the regular season, the NFLPA celebrates one player who demonstrates commitment to the cause.

Sherman, who was drafted by the Seattle Seahawks in the fifth round of the 2011 draft, is a four time select to the Pro Bowl and led the NFL in interceptions in 2013, the same year he helped the Seahawks to a Super Bowl victory. The former Stanford Cardinal played with Seattle from 2011-2017, when he was traded to the 49ers.

Sherman owns his own charity called Blanket Coverage-The Richard Sherman Family Foundation, which helps children in low-income communities by providing them with school supplies and clothing. He strives to help kids across the country achieve academic success, and as of late, he seems to be doing just that.
