The San Jose Sharks have been dwindling with offensive outbursts this season with players having goal-droughts and not being able to close in on the net more often than they should. This changed on Saturday night when the Sharks hosted the Toronto Maple Leafs and ended up shutting out the Maple Leafs 7-0.

After a scoreless first period, Sharks forward Brent Burns started the goal surge and following him was Joe Pavelski. Other players to have goals included Tomas Hertl, who scored two of his own, while Matt Nieto, Melker Karlsson and Joonas Donskoi all snapped their goal droughts they have been enduring. “It has certainly been lacking,” said Sharks forward Tommy Wingels. “There’s a lot of prideful guys in here and guys that think they can do more. There’s a lot of guys, myself included, who need to do more. That’s the only way this team is going to have success.” Sharks goaltender had 28 saves of his own and recorded his fourth shutout of the season.

On the other side of the puck, Maple Leafs goaltender Jonathan Bernier recorded 24 saves outside of the seven goals scored against him. Bernier only allowed three goals in the past three wins he had recorded before Saturday night. “The way we got beat tonight I don’t know how you want me to explain it,” defenseman Dion Phaneuf said. “We got beat handily in their building. We started out fine. I thought we were skating. They seemed to turn the tide in the second period and we couldn’t respond.”

The Sharks are in Calgary Monday night when they face the Flames while the Maple Leafs host the Columbus Blue Jackets on Wednesday night.
