Scottie Scheffler Wins The Memorial After Criminal Charges Are Dropped Against Him

On Sunday, golfer Scottie Scheffler won the Memorial in Dublin, Ohio, just days after charges were dropped him from an incident outside the PGA Championship.

The episode didn’t seem to hold him back – Sheffler finished 2-over 74.

The golfer expressed his desire to put the event in the past, stating in an Instagram story, “I hold no ill will toward Officer [Bryan] Gillis. I wish to put this incident behind me and move on, and I hope he will do the same.” He acknowledged the challenging job of police officers and characterized the situation as a severe miscommunication in a chaotic context.

During a court hearing, Jefferson County Attorney Mike O’Connell announced that the prosecutors would not pursue the case, asking for the charges to be dismissed with prejudice, which means they cannot be refiled. O’Connell said to ESPN, “Based upon the totality of the evidence, my office cannot move forward in the prosecution of the charges filed against Mr. Scheffler.”

Scheffler was arrested on May 17 by Detective Gillis, who alleged that Scheffler’s SUV accelerated and dragged him, causing injuries. While navigating traffic after a fatal shuttle bus accident, Scheffler was trying to reach Valhalla Golf Club. Arrested and released within two hours before his second-round tee time, Scheffler faced charges including felony second-degree assault of a police officer.

Steve Romines, Scheffler’s attorney, emphasized that evidence and witness accounts disproved the allegations that Scheffler’s SUV struck or dragged Gillis. Romines was prepared to file a civil suit if the criminal charges had proceeded, highlighting that litigation would be a distraction during Scheffler’s season.

Louisville Metro Police Department Chief Jacquelyn Gwinn-Villaroel revealed that Gillis was disciplined for not activating his bodycam during the incident. Additional video from Scheffler’s arrest is expected to be released.

Scheffler expressed his intent to refocus on the real tragedy of May 17, offering condolences to John Mills’ family, who was killed in the earlier incident.
