Argentine Martin Bravo and Cape Verdean Djaniny Tavares were the stars of the game for Santos: the former had two goals and one assist, and the latter added a goal and an assist.

The Galaxy got a few scoring chances early in the game, and forced a couple of big saves from Santos goalie Agustin Marchesin, but seemed to lose resolve after Bravo scored the first goal in the 19th minute. Santos added two more unanswered goals in the first half, from Tavares and Ulises Davila.

The game could have ended worse, as Galaxy goalkeeper Dan Kennedy had six saves. Although Steven Gerrard, Giovani dos Santos and Robbie Keane all started for Galaxy, coach Bruce Arena said after the game, “I didn’t see any superstars on our team tonight.”

With LA now out of the CCL, they will turn their attention to the MLS season, which begins on Sunday against D.C. United. The Mexican teams have dominated this tournament, winning the past 10 championships.

Santos will now face the winner of the quarterfinal match between Club America and the Seattle Sounders.
