Knicks Look To End Contract With Jimmer Fredette, Pass On Ty Lawson

The New York Knicks have discussed the possibility of signing point guard Ty Lawson, who was waived by the Rockets on Tuesday, but have ultimately decided not to make a play for him, according to an NBA source.

Knicks Look To End Contract With Jimmer, Pass On Lawson

The Knicks, desperate for a point guard, are more interested in a developing younger guy and seem unlikely to renew the 10-day contract of Jimmer Fredette that is set to expire Wednesday night. Fredette’s potential last game as a Knick Tuesday’s 104-85 home loss against the Portland Trail Blazers, of which he played the final 3:13 and during which he made 4-of-5 free throws, amid a wave of “Jimmer” chants.

“I have no idea,’’ Fredette said afterward. “You never know what’s going to happen next. I worry about things I can worry about. I’ll live day by day.’’

Lawson began his career with the Denver Nuggets, but in the last season-and-a-half, he has become involved in a series of alcohol-related incidents off the court. He had two DUI offenses last summer and the NBA suspended him three games. Lawson also reportedly fought with former Nuggets coach Phil Jackson confidant Brian Shaw, who could potentially be a Knicks coaching candidate after this season.

Lawson is also one of the Knicks’ free-agent possibilities this summer. The Knicks are also looking at point guard Ray McCallum, who was waived Monday by the Spurs to create room for Andre Miller.

Finally, the Knicks are also pursuing former Philadelphia 76ers point guard Tony Wroten, who was waived in January and hasn’t been signed since. The Knicks are now ranked 13th in the Eastern Conference.
