The 49ers in 2019 had a dream season. The only thing that they were missing was a Super Bowl win. They went 13-3, tops in the NFC West, and the entire NFC for that matter, and made it all the way to the Super Bowl and had the lead, but could not simply hold on against Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs. One of the big reasons for the 49ers’ success was due to the play of their defense. After having a defense that allowed the thirteenth fewest total yards per game, which included having the fewest total interceptions in the entire NFL with two, and the ninth fewest sacks with 37 in 2018. In 2019, the 49ers allowed the second fewest total yards per game, only behind the Patriots, which included the fewest passing yards allowed per game (they did not defend all too well against the run but that is a separate issue). The 49ers also saw an increase in both interceptions and sacks with 12 and 48, both of which saw the 49ers move up in the league rankings in those categories. The reason for the success of defensive coordinator Robert Salah’s defense, is the addition of guys like Nick Bosa, Richard Sherman, Kwon Alexander and Dee Ford, among others. They traded DeForest Buckner to Indianapolis in the offseason but they drafted Javon Kinlaw out of South Carolina who was projected to be one of the best defensive players in the entire draft, and they still have Arik Amrstead, Fred Warner and Jimmie Ward. On the offensive side of the ball, Jimmy Garopolo started to show why the 49ers traded for him and gave him a massive contract, despite not being proven yet. George Kittle is one of the top tight ends in all of football. The running game was superb in 2019, one of the best in the NFL with Tevin Coleman and Raheem Mostert primarily. My one concern with this team is the wide receivers. They lost Emanuel Sanders in the offseason, Deeboo Samuel, who smashed expectations in his rookie season, broke his foot and will miss the start of the season and who knows how that’ll impact his play. After that, the 49ers are left with a rookie Brandon Aiyuk, Kendrick Bourne, who was good in small doses last season, and Dante Pettis who has not performed well since entering the league. Head coach Kyle Shanahan will have to think outside of the box to maintain the offensive production this team had in 2019. One final not on the 49ers’ roster is that they have an elite offensive line, especially after trading for Trent Williams during the draft.

Looking at the 49ers’ schedule for the 2020 NFL season, the road for them to win the division in back-to-back years is not the most difficult. Prior to their Week 11 bye week, the 49ers really only have four, maybe five, games that they will be considered tough games. The games that I think will definitely be tough for the 49ers is that three week stretch from Week 8 to Week 10 where they will play at Seattle, then home against Green Bay on a short week playing on Thursday night, and then back on the road in New Orleans. All three of those teams project to be really good and could give the 49ers some trouble. The 49ers played well against all three of these teams in 2019, but to play them in back-to-back-to-back weeks will be interesting to see how they perform. Other than those three games, Week 1 against Arizona and Week 4 against Philadelphia have the potential to be games where the 49ers lose, but it is unlikely in my opinion being that both of those games are at home. After that though, the games against the Jets, Giants, Dolphins, Rams and Patriots should all be wins for the 49ers. It will be either the 49ers or the Seahawks who will win the NFC West, so if the 49ers can enter their bye week at 7-3 or better, they will be set up nicely to win the division. After their bye week, there are some relatively tougher games, but there is still an opportunity for wins. With games against the Rams and Redskins, those are two games the Niners should easily win. That would put the 49ers at nine or so wins, saying they go 7-3 prior to their bye, then win those two games against the Rams and Redskins post bye. That leaves games against the Bills, Cowboys, Cardinals and Seahawks. If the 49ers can win three out of those four games, the division should be theirs.
Being that they are the reigning NFC champions, I will most definitely try to watch the 49ers play in 2020. Here are the five 49ers games I will try to attend this season and I think you should as well:
Starting off with Week 1 against Arizona, the Cardinals look to be much improved on the offensive side of the ball with Kyler Murray now in year two and the addition of DeAndre Hopkins. This will be a great test to see as to whether or not the 49ers defense will have repeat success in 2020 than they did in 2019. Week 7 against the Patriots is intriguing for one reason only. If Cam Newton is healthy and starting for the Patriots, this could be considered a trap game for the 49ers as they could possibly get caught looking ahead to Week 8 where they’ll play Seattle. Newton starting for the Patriots makes them a significantly better team so they should not be overlooked by the Niners. Week 9 versus Green Bay. The 49ers had a significant amount of success against the Packers in 2019. Winning their two matchups against Green Bay by a score of 74-28, which included a 37-20 win in the NFC Championship Game. The key to the Niners’ success against the Packers can be credited to their defense. In their two games, the Packers were only able to muster 556 total yards, the 49ers gained a total of 693 total yards in their two games. Diving even further into the stats, the 49ers in their first game against Green Bay last season out threw them 227 yards to 81 yards. In the second game, the 49ers had an immense amount of success running the football, winning that battle 285 to 62. Both those games last season were at home for the 49ers, as will this game in Week 9, so I would say prepare for another big 49ers win in the heart of that tough stretch I mentioned earlier. Week 15 against the Cowboys in Dallas. This will be a game late in the season that could impact the playoff picture. Plus, the Cowboys have a very dynamic offense and could give the 49ers defense some issues. Finally, Week 17 against Seattle at home. Last season, the Week 17 matchup between these two teams came down to the final play of the game. Both of these squads will be fighting for the division crown in 2020. Being at home will be a huge boost, but this game could mean a lot for the NFC playoff picture and momentum heading into the playoffs, as both squads project to make deep postseason runs.
