The San Diego Padres are in second place in the NL West and hold the last wild-card spot in the National League.

San Diego finished the 2024 season with a record of 93-69, placing second in the NL West and securing a wild-card spot. The Padres beat the Atlanta Braves in the wild-card round, but lost to the division rival Los Angeles Dodgers in the NLDS in five games.

San Diego made minimal moves in the offseason because the team has all the tools to contend. San Diego signed starting pitcher Nick Pivetta to a four-year $55 million contract.

The Padres made a strong effort to sign Nippon Professional Baseball League star pitcher Roki Sasaki, but he ultimately chose to sign with the Dodgers.

This season, San Diego’s offense has been up and down, led by Manny Machado, Fernando Tatis Jr. and Luis Arraez.

The Padres are in the top half of the league for batting average and on-base percentage, but are in the bottom 10 for slugging percentage and RBIs. San Diego is also in the bottom three for home runs.

San Diego’s pitching has been excellent, led by Pivetta and Dylan Cease.

The Padres are in the top three for ERA, batting average allowed, and walks and hits per inning pitched (WHIP). The Padres are also in the top 10 for home runs allowed, and just outside the top 10 for strikeouts.

San Diego had an active trade deadline as the team looks to make a postseason push. The Padres traded for closer Mason Miller and starting pitcher J.P. Sears from the Athletics for four prospects. One of the prospects included was Leo De Vries, who’s ranked as the No. 3 overall prospect in all of baseball.

While it may seem like a steep price for a closer and a solid starting pitcher, Miller is one of the best closers in all of baseball and was a hot name on the trade market, so San Diego likely had to overpay to be the highest bidder in the Miller sweepstakes.

The Padres also traded for first baseman Ryan O’Hearn and right fielder Ramón Laureano from the Baltimore Orioles. San Diego also acquired catcher Freddy Fermin from the Kansas City Royals.

San Diego traded 11 of its top 30 prospects. While it may seem excessive, and it may put a ceiling on future trades, San Diego has one of the best rosters on paper.

If the Padres can stay healthy and the pitching remains one of the best units in baseball, San Diego may win its first-ever World Series at the end of the 2025 season.

San Diego Padres Odds

The Padres are in a fantastic position to make the postseason with -650 odds. However, it is a steep climb from there, as San Diego has +900 odds to win the National League and +1600 odds to win the World Series.
