Rockies Destroy Giants 17-7 With Historic 13-Run Fifth Inning

The Colorado Rockies annihilated the San Francisco Giants at the latter’s own AT&T Park on Thursday by scoring 13 runs on 10 hits in the fifth inning on their way to a 17-7 victory.

Last week, it was the New York Mets who had a 12-run inning against San Francisco.

Rockies shortstop Trevor Story kicked off the fifth inning with his 11th homer of the season. The following 16 batters who hit in that inning all contributed to the win: each one either drove in a run or scored a run, leaving right-hander Matt Cain and the rest of the Giants defense stunned.

The 13 runs set a franchise record for Colorado, and were more the most scored in any single inning by any team since 2010.

“Hitting is contagious,” Story said. “You could see it.”

The Rockies are now 14-14 and in a three-way tie atop the National League West, with the Giants (15-15) and the Los Angeles Dodgers (14-14).

Although Story, 23, had the only homer in the inning, Carlos Gonzalez, Tony Wolters, Charlie Blackmon and Mark Reynolds all doubled. Cain left the mound after allowing just four batters, thus making reliever Vin Mazzaro the big loser. Mazzaro allowed nine runs on six hits, a hit batsman and a walk while recording just one out, thus increasing his ERA from 0.00 to 63.00.

Rockies starting pitcher Chris Rusin drove in a run in the historic top of the fifth and lasted 4 1/3 innings in total.

“It’s really hard to score runs here. This place suppresses offense really well,” Blackmon said. “To score a lot of runs like that, it was nice to see.”

Blackmon was the only Colorado player who didn’t bat twice in the fifth inning.
