Former NBA guard Delonte West was arrested early Thursday morning in Groveton, Virginia, on misdemeanor charges of violating the conditions of his release and resisting arrest, according to local authorities. West, 40, is currently being held at the Fairfax County Detention Center on a $2,000 bond.
Fairfax County police reported encountering West around 1 a.m. while attempting to serve a warrant. When officers approached, a pursuit ensued, but West eventually lost consciousness after the police lost sight of him during the chase.
Narcan, a medication used to treat narcotic overdoses, was administered to West but initially had no effect. After being transported to a local hospital, Narcan was administered a second time, successfully reviving him. Subsequently, West was discharged from the hospital and taken into custody at the Fairfax County Detention Center.
West has been open about his struggles with bipolar disorder throughout his NBA career and has faced substance abuse issues in recent years. In 2021, he underwent treatment at a drug rehabilitation therapy center in Florida, where he later worked, thanks to the intervention of former Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban. Cuban, who helped West in September 2020 after pictures surfaced of West panhandling in Dallas, was one of several NBA figures who tried to assist him during his time of need.
During his eight-year NBA career, West played for the Boston Celtics, Seattle SuperSonics, Cleveland Cavaliers and Dallas Mavericks, averaging 9.7 points and 3.6 assists per game. His last NBA season was with the Mavericks in 2011-12. Despite his on-court successes, West’s off-court battles have overshadowed his professional achievements in recent years.
