John Thompson Jr. (August 30, Age 78)
On Sunday, it was announced that legendary Georgetown basketball coach John Thompson Jr. died at the age of 78. Thompson led the school to a 1984 national championship, a team that featured NBA legend Patrick Ewing, and seven Big East titles. Through Georgetown, Thompson’s family released a statement regarding his death:
“We are heartbroken to share the news of the passing of our father, John Thompson, Jr,” the Thompson family said. “Our father was an inspiration to many and devoted his life to developing young people not simply on, but most importantly, off the basketball court. He is revered as a historic shepherd of the sport, dedicated to the welfare of his community above all else.
