Ed Whitlock (March 13, 2017, age 86)
Ed Whitlock, an English-born Canadian runner who was the first septuagenarian to run a marathon in under three hours, died on March 13 at age 86.
Whitlock, who also ran a 3:56.38 marathon at age 85 in Toronto in October 2016, was raised in London and then moved to Canada after college. He died of prostate cancer in a Toronto hospital (Princess Margaret Cancer Centre) one week after his 86th birthday, his family said in a statement.
In 2003, he ran the Toronto Waterfront Marathon in two hours 59 minutes 10 seconds at age 72 to become the first septuagenarian marathoner to break the three-hour mark.
