Philadelphia Eagles Sign Former Super Bowl MVP Joe Flacco

The Philadelphia Eagles have brought in Joe Flacco as their backup quarterback. On Tuesday, the team announced that Flacco agreed to a one-year deal, with $3.5 million guaranteed.

“We want to have a really strong quarterback room,” general manager Howie Roseman said last week. “We’ve always tried to value that position and have depth at that position.”

With the addition of Flacco, the team gets exactly what Roseman wants. Flacco is a veteran quarterback who will serve as a mentor to second-year starter Jalen Hurts.

Flacco was drafted in the 2008 NFL Draft by the Baltimore Ravens. The veteran quarterback spent 11 seasons with the Ravens and emerged as a solid quarterback. Flacco led the Ravens to a Super Bowl victory and was named the Super Bowl MVP in 2013. In February of 2019, the Ravens traded Flacco to the Denver Broncos for a fourth-round draft pick. After one season in Denver, Flacco signed with the New York Jets to serve as Sam Darnold’s backup. The veteran played in five games with the Jets, accumulating 854 passing yards and six touchdowns.

Flacco will serve as the backup quarterback to Hurts in Philadelphia. Hurts will benefit greatly from the older quarterback’s presence. Hurts is expected to be the team’s starting quarterback after the Eagles traded their other quarterbacks. Earlier in the offseason, the Eagles traded Carson Wentz to the Indianapolis Colts due to Wentz’s horrendous 2020 season. The Eagles could still possibly draft another quarterback in the upcoming draft, but Hurts looked relatively good in his rookie season.

The Eagles are expected to struggle in 2021, despite the fact that the NFC East might be the worst division in football. Philadelphia is expected to finish at the bottom of the standings.
