PGA Golfer Justin Thomas Apologizes After Using Homophobic Slur

Golfer Justin Thomas has apologized for using a homophobic slur during the Sentry Tournament of Champions on Sunday.

The incident occurred during the third round of the tournament. Mics were attached to the golfers and as Thomas missed a putt, he referred to himself as a homophobic slur after his miss. The microphone picked this up as the audience heard him using the word.

After the round ended, he was interviewed and asked about the slur use, “There’s absolutely no reason for me to say anything like that. It’s terrible,” Thomas said. The 27-year-old golfer has been “very apologetic” for using the word. The PGA tour in a Sunday statement condemned Thomas’ slur use, saying, “As he expressed after his round, we agree that Justin’s comment was unacceptable.”

Thomas, who is a former number one ranked golfer, has won five PGA Tour events. The five wins include winning the prestigious PGA Championship in 2017. 2017 was his breakout year where he won the PGA Championship, FedEx Cup, PGA Player of the Year and the PGA Tour Player of the Year.
