The 23-year-old power forward/center signed a five-year, $145-million extension with the team last July, and had incentives embedded into his contract that would have paid him a greater percentage of the team’s cap should he hit some thresholds.

A provision in the collective bargaining agreement known as the “Derrick Rose rule” states that a player on a rookie contract who is voted an All-Star starter twice, voted to any of the three All-NBA teams twice or wins a regular-season MVP award is eligible to make 30 percent of the league’s cap amount instead of 25 percent.

Davis, who suffered a shoulder injury throughout the 2015-2016 season (and thus missed 21 games), also didn’t earn starter status in the All-Star Game. The $24 million he missed out on represents the entirety of the extension he signed last summer, and this will significantly impact his earning potential going forward. He’s simply out nearly a quarter of $100 million over the next five years, representing about $5 million per season. Davis averaged 24.3 points, 10.3 rebounds and 2.0 blocked shots last season.

The Golden State Warriors’ Draymond Green and the San Antonio Spurs’ LaMarcus Aldridge were the two power forwards selected over Davis, to the second and third All-NBA teams respectively.

The media voted for All-NBA first, second and third teams by position with points awarded on a 5-3-1 basis.  Voters were asked to select two guards, two forwards and one center for each team, choosing players at the position they regularly play. Players who received votes at multiple positions were slotted at the spot at which they received the most votes.

The first team did not include a traditional power forward. Instead, it chose to go with LeBron James and the Spurs’ Kawhi Leonard at the forward positions. Stephen Curry, Russell Westbrook, and DeAndre Jordan were also chosen to the first team.
