The New England Patriots gave their offense a boost on Tuesday by signing free-agent wide receivers Corey Coleman and Bennie Fowler.
The team has been desperately seeking to fill the position, since veteran Julian Edelman is suspended for the first four games of the season. New England can also rely on receivers Chris Hogan, Phillip Dorsett and Cordarrelle Patterson.
This week, the Patriots also waived second-year wideout and punt returner Riley McCarron. The team also cut receivers Eric Decker, Kenny Britt, Malcolm Mitchell and Jordan Matthews throughout training camp.

Coleman — a former Baylor receiver whom the Cleveland Browns drafted as a first-round pick in 2016 — did not turn out to be as productive as the Browns had hoped, and he was traded on Aug. 6 to the Buffalo Bills in exchange for a 2020 seventh-round draft pick. Coleman wasn’t ultimately chosen for the Bills’ 53-man roster and Buffalo released him on Sept. 1.
In two campaigns with Cleveland, Coleman logged 56 catches and five touchdowns. It now seems like Coleman will be paired with a much stronger offense and quarterback than ever before.
Meanwhile, 27-year-old Fowler — who went undrafted to the Denver Broncos out of Michigan State in 2014 — helped lead Denver to a Super Bowl victory after the 2015 season. After four seasons with the Broncos, the 6-foot-1, 212-pound receiver signed a one-year deal with the Chicago Bears in April, but was cut after failing to making the final roster.
