Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes helped lead his team to a 25-22 overtime victory against the San Fransisco 49ers in Super Bowl LVIII.

With the win, he joins Tom Brady, Troy Aikman, Terry Bradshaw and Joe Montana as the only quarterbacks to win at least three Super Bowls. Mahomes also separated himself as he won his third Super Bowl MVP award, putting him with Brady (five times) and Montana (three times) as the only players to win the award at least three times in their career.

Mahomes also has won two regular season MVP awards in 2018 and 2022 and has made the AFC Championship game in each of the six seasons he has played with Kansas City. He also currently holds the NFL record for career passing yards per game at 296.1 and total QB yards in a season at 5,614.

He is also tied with Montana for the most touchdown passes in a single postseason, with 11 in 2021. He doesn’t just use his arm however, as Mahomes had a team-leading 66 rushing yards in the Super Bowl. He was able to scramble and pick up multiple first downs late in the game which kept the Chiefs’ chances alive, quickly outpacing the five rushing yards he averaged during the regular season. He ended the game second in quarterback rushing yards in the championship game, only a few short from the record Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts set against the Chiefs last year.

Mahomes has seen success for the majority of his career, winning multiple Super Bowls and setting records all before the age of 30. His success has caused many comparisons between him and Brady, with Mahomes seemingly following in a similar path of the player with the “greatest-of-all-time” label. Though some fans may never think the newer version is never as good as the old, what Mahomes is doing in the NFL is unique, and should be appreciated because we may never see it again.

Currently, Mahomes is 28 years old with three Super Bowl wins, the same as Brady at that age. Even with him already in the same conversation, Mahomes will need to do much more if he wants to match the seven Super Bowl wins and truly take the crown as the best quarterback to ever play the game. But so far, he’s on the right path.
