Panthers Keep Undefeated Record After Beating Eagles

For the first time in franchise history, the Carolina Panthers are 6-0 to start the regular season and it seems the magic is not slipping up any time soon. This is because of the consistent results quarterback Cam Newton has been producing and head coach Ron Rivera‘s strategic play calling, and last night was no different in their Sunday Night Football home matchup against the Philadelphia Eagles.

A recurring stat that Newton has been doing is both passing and rushing for a touchdown, doing it for the fourth time this season and the 28th time in his career, putting him only three three behind NFL Hall of Famer Steve Young for the record. The Panthers running game was on hand to help the offense flow with yards, with Jonathan Stewart running for 119 yards and Mike Tolbert rushing for two touchdowns. Newton finished the game with 14-24 for 197 yards and three interceptions. The Eagles would not give up just yet with field goals kicked by Caleb Sturgis and a big 63-yard touchdown run by running back Ryan Mathews. With a chance to tie the game with two minutes left, Eagles quarterback Sam Bradford was sacked twice by veteran defensive end Jared Allen, closing any chance of the Eagles coming back and a 24-16 win by the Panthers.

Carolina is one of five teams (New England, Green Bay, Cincinnati, and Denver) who are left undefeated in the NFL currently, which is the first time to happen in NFL history. The Panthers stay home next week for Monday Night Football against a struggling Indianapolis Colts team in hopes of keeping their undefeated record alive.
