Panthers’ Cam Newton Put On Reserve With Season-Ending Foot Injury

The Carolina Panthers on Tuesday placed quarterback Cam Newton on injured reserve following his season-ending foot injury. There is no timetable for his return.

Newton sustained the injury during the preseason and aggravated it in a Week 2 loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Following Newton’s visit with a specialist in Wisconsin last week, the Panthers decided the best course of action was to rest the 30-year-old QB and three-time Pro Bowler for the remainder of the season.

“For the past seven weeks, Cam has diligently followed a program of rest and rehab and still is experiencing pain in his foot,” general manager Marty Hurney said in a statement provided to ESPN. “He saw two foot specialists last week who agreed that he should continue that path prescribed by the team’s medical staff, and that it likely will take significant time for the injury to fully heal. ”

Prior to this injury, Newton — the 2015 NFL MVP — had only missed three starts over the last seven years.

Carolina will now turn to second-year undrafted quarterback Kyle Allen, who has gone 5-1 this season as a starter.

Newton still has one year remaining on his contract and is owed $18.6 million in 2020. The Panthers could save $19.1 million by releasing him after this season.

The quarterback leads Carolina in in both career touchdown passes (182) and rushing touchdowns (58). He is also the first signal-caller in league history to boast 50 or more rushing scores.

However, Newton — the No. 1 overall draft pick in 2011 — had lost eight consecutive games dating back to the 2018 season. The Panthers will be missing an accomplished quarterback for some time, even though he has struggled as of late.
