NFL commissioner Roger Goodell said that the league will adopt a rule similar to the “Rooney Rule” for women, when teams are interviewing for front office positions. Goodell was speaking at the inaugural NFL Women’s Summit in San Francisco.
The Rooney Rule mandates that teams must interview minority candidates when searching for new coaches or front office personnel. During the 2015 season there were seven minority general managers or personnel executives, the most ever, and 19 minority head coaches or coordinators.
The Buffalo Bills made history last month when they hired Kathryn Smith to be their special teams quality coach, Smith is the first full-time female coach in NFL history.
There is still no timetable for when the rule will come into effect.
