The Giants lost to the Pittsburgh Steelers 20-12 on Aug. 11 in their preseason opener at MetLife Stadium. The Browns, meanwhile, defeated the New Orleans Saints 20-14 in their preseason opener in Cleveland on Aug. 10.
According to dawgsbynature.com, the following Browns players are expected to miss Monday’s game due to injuries:
Offense:
OG Joel Bitonio (knee)
OT Cameron Erving (calf)
C Gabe Ikard (concussion)
Defense:
DT Danny Shelton (knee)
DT Caleb Brantley (shoulder)
DE Cam Johnson (knee)
CB Marcus Burley (face laceration)
SS Ibraheim Campbell (concussion)
FS Ed Reynolds (knee)
Eli Manning and Odell Beckham Jr., among several other Giants starters, did not play in the team’s preseason opener, although they are expected to play on Monday night. The G-Men’s coach Ben McAdoo said last week that Manning — who is entering his 14th NFL season — would play in the second and third preseason games.
The Giants players who are injured include linebacker Keenan Robinson, who is back in the concussion protocol. Cornerback Eli Apple — who missed time this week with a bruised ankle — is questionable to play on Thursday. McAdoo also said wide receivers Darius Powe and Dwayne Harris will likely sit out the game in Cleveland.
Rookie Giants tight end Evan Engram will likely play again following his strong performance against Pittsburgh in the opener. Engam, a first-round pick out of Ole Miss, caught one pass for 11 yards on two targets in his debut and has impressed at the team’s practices thus far, particularly in the red zone. Rookie defensive end Dalvin Tomlinson — a 2017 second-round pick out of Alabama who had four tackles in the opener — will also likely play again on Thursday.
One of the most anticipated aspects of Thursday’s game, however, will be the matchup between Giants third-year offensive tackle Ereck Flowers and Browns rookie defensive end Myles Garrett. Garrett — this year’s No. 1 overall draft pick out of Texas A&M — has impressed even though he failed to record a sack in Cleveland’s preseason opener. Meanwhile, Flowers — the 9th overall pick out of Miami in 2015 — was fantastic in the Giants’ preseason opener. He finished with 12 pass block snaps, according to Pro Football Focus:
Among the Browns’ other rookies who will likely play on Thursday are Miami tight end David Njoku (first-round, No. 29), who missed the preseason opener with a back injury and Michigan safety Jabrill Peppers (No. 25 overall), a utility player. Notre Dame quarterback DeShone Kizer, a second-round pick who is working with Cleveland’s second team. Brock Osweiler will likely start at QB for the Browns, who was traded from Houston in March after just one disappointing season with the Texans. As part of that deal, the Browns also received the Texans’ 2017 sixth-round pick and 2018 second-round pick in exchange for the Browns’ 2017 fourth-round compensatory pick.
McAdoo also said he would like to have all four Giants quarterbacks play on Thursday: Manning, Josh Johnson, Geno Smith and rookie Davis Webb, a third-round draft pick out of California.
