NFL Invited Colin Kaepernick To Meet 1-On-1 With Roger Goodell

It was reported Tuesday that the NFL has invited Colin Kaepernick to attend a one-on-one meeting with commissioner Roger Goodell.

Kaepernick has not yet said if he will attend, however. The Houston Texans have reportedly discussed signing the free-agent quarterback following Deshaun Watson’s season-ending ACL injury last week. Backup QB Tom Savage started Houston’s season opener but was replaced by Watson following a terrible first half. Watson will undergo surgery on Wednesday.

“Oh yeah, everybody gets discussed,” said Texans coach Bill O’Brien. “Is that a problem? Isn’t that the way most teams do it. People seem shocked by that.”

Troy Vincent — the NFL’s executive vice president of football operations — texted Kaepernick on Oct. 31 to update him on the continuing discussions about social issues between players and owners, said league spokesman Joe Lockharrt.

At the end of the text message, Vincent officially invited Kaepernick — who turned 30 on Friday — to meet with Goodell, although Kaepernick has not yet responded.

Last month, Kaepernick filed a grievance against all 32 NFL owners (under the collective bargaining agreement), accusing them of colluding to keep him out of the league for protesting the national anthem by kneeling.

Per ESPN, Goodell, Vincent and NFL senior vice president of player engagement Arthur McAFee will be deposed and asked to turn over all cellphone records and emails relating to Kaepernick’s collusion grievance.

Kaepernick’s protest was aimed at making a statement about racial injustice, particularly police brutality against unarmed black Americans.

After filing the grievance, Kaepernick tweeted that he did so “only after pursuing every possible avenue with all NFL teams and their executives.”
