Denver coach Vic Fangio
On Monday, NFL handed out heavy fines to three head coaches and their teams for not wearing masks on the sidelines during Sunday. The coaches – Denver’s Vic Fangio, Seattle’s Pete Carroll and San Francisco’s Kyle Shanahan – were fined $100,000 each for not wearing masks Sunday, and each of their teams another $250,000 fine.
On the sidelines, most of the coaches can be seen occasionally removing their masks or not using them correctly, but these coaches were fined heavily for not even attempting to wear a mask. It will be interesting to see if these fines continue or if the NFL becomes more stringent about the rule and begins to fine coaches and teams for incorrectly using their masks.
Last week, the NFL warned coaches about mask use, and Las Vegas Raiders coach Jon Gruden felt the memo was directed at him. “I’m doing my best,” Gruden said. “I’ve had the virus. I’m doing my best. I’m very sensitive about it … I’m calling plays. I just wanna communicate in these situations, and if I get fined, I’ll have to pay the fine, but I’m very sensitive about that and I apologize.”
