The Islanders are coming off of a playoff run in the 2018-19 season that was shocking to many. The team is looking to hone its young talent and build on last year’s success heading into the new campaign.

After losing goaltender Robin Lehner, a finalist for the Vezina Trophy last season to Chicago in the offseason, the Islanders are left with just half of their elite goaltending duo: Thomas Greiss. New York also added goaltender Semyon Varlamov in the offseason and is hoping that the new pair can be just as successful as last year’s.

A breakout season from the defense also gives the Islanders hope heading into the season, as last year they went from allowing the most goals in the NHL to allowing the fewest. The defense is backed by many young defensemen such as top prospect Noah Dobson, the 12th overall pick in the 2018 NHL Draft.

One potential weakness for this year’s Islanders is their depth at the forward position. The offense will be anchored by the talent of their top line, which features Mathew Barzal at center and Jordan Eberle and captain Anders Lee on the wings. After that, the Isles will rely on young, talented players who can potentially step up this year, such as prospective right wing Oliver Wahlstrom (also a first-round pick in last year’s draft who was selected 11th overall).

Led by coach Barry Trotz, the Islanders are hoping that their defense will remain a fortress and that the offense can produce in order to take them back to the playoffs once again.
