New York Giants Sign Golden Tate

After trading away star wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr, the New York Giants insist that they have a plan. Maybe that plan was to trade OBJ, bring in assets, and replace him with a solid locker room guy in Golden Tate.

The Giants signed the 30-year-old former Seahawk to a four-year, $37.5 million deal. The contract also includes $23 million in guarantees.

After shipping off Beckham, the team turned to the best wide receiver on the market. Tate is a solid slot receiver who caught the eighth-most passes since entering the league in 2010 and is no. 16 in receiving yards over that same span. Tate was drafted in the second round by Seattle, was shipped off to the Detroit Lions after winning Super Bowl XLVIII, before being traded to the Philadelphia Eagles late in the 2018 season. This past year, he caught 74 passes for 795 yards and four touchdowns despite being on two teams. This should give the Giants confidence that he’ll easily fit in with the team.

While he won’t turn the Giants into a championship contender, Tate improves the team. They’ll compete in a few more games with him on the roster and he’ll be able to help the team develop rookies. After signing his deal, Tate seemed ecstatic, even reenacting the “show me the money” scene from Jerry Maguire.

However, some fans were wary of the signing. Trading away a young star for an older, expensive vet isn’t a smart move, especially for a team that’s supposed to be rebuilding. While Tate is a talented roster and might be able to shift to Beckham’s role, the slot spot is already taken by Sterling Shepard. The move will also cost the team at least a fifth-round compensation pick.

In January, Tate said: “My time is limited. I want to go to a team that has a chance. I don’t want to go to somewhere that’s trying to rebuild. I want to win now.”
