Coming off a divisional round appearance in 2022, the New York Giants’ faithful had reasons to be optimistic for 2023. However, a demanding first-half schedule, quarterback carousel and poor offensive line play crushed any hope.
Daniel Jones suffered a neck injury in week five, causing Tyrod Taylor to start weeks six and seven. Tommy DeVito saw action when Taylor went down with a rib injury during week eight’s game against the Jets and started from Weeks 10 to 15 after Jones tore his ACL in week nine’s game against the Las Vegas Raiders. The Giants suffered two humiliating defeats to the rival Cowboys, being outscored 89-17 while the offensive line allowed 85 sacks in 2023, the second-highest number allowed in a season. Despite a season of lowlights, the Giants defeated the Commanders twice, upset the Packers and bested the Eagles in week 18. New York finished 2023 6-11.
Pro-bowl running back Saquon Barkley didn’t receive a new contract and departed in free agency. He then signed with the Eagles for $37.75 million over three years. Xavier McKinney was the next to exit, as he joined the Packers for the next four years. Receivers Parris Campbell and Sterling Shepard also left New York, signing with the Eagles and Buccaneers, respectively. The Giants re-signed linebacker Isaiah Simmons and corner Darnay Holmes.
New York made a plethora of signings to counter departures – some acquisitions include Drew Lock, Allen Robinson, Jalen Mills, Devin Singletary and Jordan Phillips. The Giants traded three draft picks to the Carolina Panthers to acquire linebacker Brian Burns in order to boost the pass rush.

LSU receiver Malik Nabers was taken sixth overall despite speculation of New York trading up with the Patriots to take quarterback Drake Maye. Nabers provides explosive playmaking abilities, something New York lacks in the receiving department – in 2023, Nabers was the fourth-best in the FBS in yards out of the slot, with 1,009.
New York has the NFL’s sixth-toughest schedule heading into 2024. In week ten, the G-Men will play their first-ever game in Germany, squaring off with the Carolina Panthers in Munich. Other notable games include the Browns, Seahawks, Bengals, Steelers, Buccaneers, Ravens and annual matchups with the Commanders, Cowboys and Eagles.
New York will attempt to improve from 2023 after a major roster revamp. That task won’t be easy, however, as there are doubts regarding Jones and the offensive line.
