NCAA’s Mid-American Conference Eliminating 9 Conference Tournaments While Changing 8 Others

The coronavirus pandemic has forced people across the country, and the world for that matter, to make drastic changes, and it seems that the Mid-American Conference of the NCAA is making changes.

The conference announced Tuesday that they will be eliminating the conference tournaments for eight of its sports, with baseball, softball, men’s and women’s tennis, field hockey, men’s and women’s soccer and women’s lacrosse all having their conference tournaments terminated. Despite elinimating conference tournaments for these eight sports, it does not mean that athletes at Mid-American Conference schools will not get the opportunity to partake in the NCAA tournament, as the conference has said that the regular-season champion for each of these sports will compete in the NCAA tournament.

Other sports, such as men’s and women’s basketball, will also see changes to their conference tournaments. In a statement released by the conference, they detailed what the tournaments for the sports who didn’t have their tournaments canceled would look like. “There will be alterations in formats for nine other championships – volleyball (four-team), men’s basketball (eight-team), women’s basketball (eight-team), men’s swimming & diving (three-day), women’s swimming & diving (three-day), men’s indoor and outdoor track & field (two-day), women’s indoor and outdoor track & field (two-day), men’s golf (two-day) and women’s golf (two-day),” a statement from the NCAA read.

The question now is will other conferences follow the MAC’s example.
