NBA: Ex-Blazers Guard Brandon Roy Recovering From Injuries In Los Angeles Shooting

Brandon Roy, a former NBA All-Star guard, was injured in a shooting in Los Angeles over the weekend, although several reports claim he is expected to make a full recovery.

Ex-Blazers Guard Brandon Roy Expected to Fully recover from Los Angeles Shooting Injuries

The 32-year-old, who played for the Portland Trail Blazers from 2006 to 2011, was allegedly an innocent bystander when gunshots, believed to come from a local gang, went off near his grandmother’s home.

USA TODAY’s Sam Amick confirmed the news, citing a source who stated “someone opened fire randomly” and that Roy , who is a head basketball coach at Seattle’s Nathan Hale High School, took bullets to the leg while protecting children.

Seattle’s KING 5 television news station reported that Roy has returned to Washington, his home state, after being treated in Los Angeles and that the guard is expected to make a full recovery.

The Blazers released a statement regarding the shooting on Tuesday night:

“Like many others, we’re just learning of the injury suffered by former Trail Blazers player Brandon Roy in a shooting over the weekend in California,” the statement read. “According to those reports, Brandon was wounded as a bystander, but is expected to recover. Our thoughts and prayers are with Brandon and his family during this time.”

The former shooting guard was drafted by the Minnesota Timberwolves as the sixth overall pick in 2006 out of Washington and immediately traded to the Blazers, with whom he made three All-Star appearances in his first five seasons in the NBA before a series of knee injuries hampered his career and he took a break. Roy then made a comeback, playing five games in one season with the Timberwolves (2012-2013), and retired at age 28 after being released by the team.

Roy took over Nathan Hale’s boy’s basketball program in the fall of 2016. Hale won a Washington state title and the nation’s top team ranking, while Roy was named Naismith National High School Coach of the Year after leading the team to a perfect record (29-0) during the regular season.
