The body of Clemson associate athletic director Bert Henderson was found near his home in rural South Carolina on Tuesday, one day after he was reported missing. He was 60.
Clemson’s athletic department confirmed the news on Twitter, shortly before the Anderson County Sheriff’s Office posted a statement to Facebook.
“Anderson County Sheriff Chad McBride and County Coroner Greg Shore have confirmed that the body of Mr. Bert Henderson has been located adjacent to his property,” the Sheriff’s Office statement said. “The family has been notified and the death investigation has been turned over Sheriff’s Office detectives.”

Henderson did not attend work on Monday and was reported missing later that day. Clemson said in a statement, posted on Twitter by Independent Mail reporter Mike Ellis, that following Henderson’s disappearance, they notified a friend who then contacted the athletic director’s family, who in turn called the police around 3:45 pm ET.
By Tuesday morning, eight search and rescue teams from Anderson County and adjacent Pickens County had begun searching the area for clues. More than 100 people were involved. Search teams from other nearby counties were on standby for assistance, according to the Independent Mail.
Henderson’s tenure at Clemson began in 1978 as an athletic trainer. He served as an instructor at the university for 12 years and held several positions with the athletic department over the years. His death comes just one month after the Tigers won the national football championship.
