Henderson did not attend work on Monday and was reported missing later that day. Clemson said in a statement, posted on Twitter by Independent Mail reporter Mike Ellis, that following Henderson’s disappearance, they notified a friend who then contacted the athletic director’s family, who in turn called the police around 3:45 pm ET.

By Tuesday morning, eight search and rescue teams from Anderson County and adjacent Pickens County had begun searching the area for clues. More than 100 people were involved. Search teams from other nearby counties were on standby for assistance, according to the Independent Mail.

Henderson’s tenure at Clemson began in 1978 as an athletic trainer. He served as an instructor at the university for 12 years and held several positions with the athletic department over the years. His death comes just one month after the Tigers won the national football championship.
