Minnesota Twins Outlook: News, Schedule, Tickets, Odds

The Minnesota Twins are five games under .500, and in third place in the AL Central.

Minnesota missed out on the 2024 postseason, concluding the offseason without making significant spending or trades to significantly improve the roster. The Twins signed first baseman Ty France, outfielder Harrison Bader and relief pitcher Danny Coulombe to a total of $10.25 million.

Despite the three players being on team-friendly deals, all three have outplayed their contracts. France is hitting above league average, Bader is hitting league average, and Coulombe has pitched 22.1 innings with an ERA of 0.81.

Joe Ryan and Pablo Lopez lead Minnesota’s pitching. The pitching has been very top-heavy, and outside of the top two starters and top bullpen arms, consistency has been an issue.

Minnesota has walked the fewest batters this season, is in the top 10 for strikeouts, and is in the top half of the league for walks and hits per inning pitched (WHIP). Even though the Twins excel in some metrics, they’re in the bottom 10 for ERA and hits allowed, and they’re in the bottom half of the league for batting average allowed.

The Twins’ offense is led by centerfielder Byron Buxton, third baseman Brooks Lee, and left fielder Willi Castro. Similarly to the pitching, Minnesota’s offense has been top-heavy, resulting in inconsistencies from game to game.

Minnesota is in the top half of the league for home runs and runs scored. However, it’s in the bottom 10 for batting average, hits, and on-base percentage.

The Twins are currently without Lopez due to a grade 2 strain of his right shoulder’s teres major muscle. Lopez is on the 60-day IL, and he will likely be sidelined until August or September.

Minnesota is optimistic that Lopez will be back later this season, but if the team is out of the postseason picture later in the season, it may be smart to rest Lopez for the remainder of the season and re-tool for next season.

The Twins will be an interesting team to monitor at the trade deadline because they could be buyers in hopes of contending for a Wild Card spot. But, it could also be sellers in hopes of gaining youth to compete for future seasons.
