HOUSTON, TX - FEBRUARY 05: Dont'a Hightower #54 of the New England Patriots celebrates with Devin McCourty #32 after forcing a fumble from Matt Ryan #2 of the Atlanta Falcons during the fourth quarter of Super Bowl 51 at NRG Stadium on February 5, 2017 in Houston, Texas.
If you’ve ever watched the Patriots in the postseason, you’ve seen two key safeties throughout their second dynasty. And of course, you’ve seen the Pats in the playoffs. If not, you probably haven’t watched them at all.
Those two safeties are Duron Harmon and Devin McCourty. Harmon, despite being an above average player, has always had a knack for batting down a pass at the end of a close game. And McCourty is such a skilled player that it seems that he’s in two places at once. But if you’ve thought that this year, you’re probably not wrong.
During the offseason, the Patriots acquired Devin’s twin brother, Jason, from the Cleveland Browns. Before that, he played for the Tennessee Titans. Now in his tenth NFL year, he’s playing in the playoffs for the first time. Devin, on the other hand, has never missed an AFC Conference game in his career.

But the feel-good story might not end well for fans. The brothers might call it quits after this season. Jason will hit the market again after Super Bowl LIII and Devin has one more year left on his contract. After five Super Bowl appearances and three All-Pro teams, it’s hard to imagine he has anything left to prove.
“I don’t know for sure, man. But I do look at it — if we can win this game, winning with my brother, I don’t know what else I could do that could top that,” McCourty said at the interview podium on Super Bowl media opening night while being questioned by Deion Sanders. “So I’m just trying to make sure I enjoy this season and enjoy these last couple days with these guys.”
Devin is an eight-time captain for the Patriots. If they win, this means there’s a good chance the team is without a crucial piece of their success as well as another solid secondary member in Jason. At last year’s Super Bowl, coach Bill Belichick heaped praise on Devin. “There’s not many that do more behind the scenes than Devin does,” he said. “He’s an outstanding player and an even better person and better teammate. I couldn’t be prouder to coach a player than Devin McCourty.”
The two will take the field on Sunday at 6:30 p.m. EST against the Los Angeles Rams.
