Max Scherzer Superb In Second No-Hitter Of Regular Season
Max Scherzer has been one of the effective pitchers in baseball ever since his MLB debut back in 2008 and he continues to show it to this present day. This is because the Washington Nationals pitcher threw his second no-hitter against the New York Mets this past Saturday night in Citi Field, capping the feat with a whopping 17 strikeouts to go along with it, a new team record.
This no-hitter comes after Scherzer pitched another one on June 20 against the Pittsburgh Pirates, which was nearly a perfect game if he had not hit the 26th batter with a wild pitch. The only flaw of the no-hitter on Saturday was an error by Nationals third baseman Yunel Escobar bouncing a throw to first base to get Mets catcher Kevin Plawecki out. The final out came from a pop-up hit by outfielder Curtis Granderson to Escobar who solidified the no-hitter and had Scherzer’s pitch count end at 109 pitches.
Scherzer joins an impressive company of five pitchers who have accomplished two no-hitters in a season – Roy Halladay (2010), Nolan Ryan (1973), Virgil Trucks (1952), Allie Reynolds (1951) and Johnny Vander Meer (1938). The former Cy Young Award winner was in disbelief after the game that these no-hitters have actually happened this season. “Guys, I’m speechless about that,” Scherzer said. “I don’t know what to say. You go out there and try to have as much success as possible. You try to accomplish as much as you can and do everything you can. … To have that happen twice in a season, it’s special. And when you start talking about the history of the game, you can’t even really think about that. That’s why I’m speechless.”
Despite the Nationals failing season from being World Series favorites to missing the playoffs completely, Scherzer’s gem pitching can be a highlight for any Nationals fan to enjoy.
