Uruguay international Luis Suarez completed a long-awaited free transfer to La Liga side and FC Barcelona rivals Atletico Madrid. Atletico Madrid are also expected to pay FC Barcelona up to 6 million euros, depending on the player’s performance with the club.
The striker recently had problems with the FC Barcelona management for hindering his move to Atletico Madrid, because of the clubs’ rivalry. After successful negotiations with the club, the player was able to reach a deal and join the Spanish side.
Suarez spent six years at FC Barcelona after joining the club from Liverpool in 2014, and won the UEFA Champions League, the Club World Cup, four La Liga titles, two Spanish Super Cups, one European Cup and four Copa Del Rey titles. Individually, the striker won the 2014 and 2016 Golden Boot.
The player formed a deadly attacking trident, the MSN, with Lionel Messi and former FC Barcelona player Neymar. He was also crowned the club’s third all-time goalscorer, scoring 198 goals in 283 games.
By moving to Atletico Madrid, Suarez will be a new addition to the club’s forwards which includes Diego Costa, Joao Felix, Angel Correa and Nikola Kalinic. Suarez will also be a replacement to striker Alvaro Morata, who recently left the club for Serie A side Juventus on a one year loan deal.

Today, the player held a final press conference to say his goodbyes to the club. He reflected on his years at FC Barcelona and the friendships he created with the players, especially Messi. Suarez also claimed that he is departing because he was no longer in the club’s plans. He said he wanted to join a side that could rival La Liga giants FC Barcelona and Real Madrid, and Atletico Madrid was his final choice.
