Los Angeles Rams’ QB Jared Goff Undergoes Thumb Surgery
On Monday, Los Angeles Rams quarterback Jared Goff underwent surgery on his broken right thumb. He will be sidelined for the Ram’s season finale against the Arizona Cardinals, according to team head coach Sean McVay.
Since the Rams have a playoff berth at stake, they will look to backup quarterback John Wolford, who has never appeared in an NFL game since he went undrafted in 2018 from Wake Forest.
The Rams signed Wolford after he played eight games for the Arizona Hotshots of the Alliance of American Football. Though the AAF has since folded, Wolford earned offensive player of the week twice and led the league with 14 touchdowns.
The Rams are also in the process of signing QB Blake Bortles from the Denver Broncos’ practice squad, according to McVay. Bortles was Goff’s backup last season and since he knows about the Rams offense, he would be a sound option behind Wolford. Coach McVay also left open the possibility of Bryce Perkins, an undrafted rookie on the practice squad making the active roster.

For the Rams to clinch a playoff spot this season, they must defeat the Arizona Cardinals in Week 17 at SoFi Stadium, or the Green Bay Packers need to beat the Chicago Bears at Soldier Field in Chicago.
Goff, 26, dislocated and broke his right thumb at the end of the third quarter in a game against the Seattle Seahawks as his hand collided with defensive end Benson Mayowa‘s helmet. Goff popped his thumb back into place and finished the rest of the game going 24-for-234 yards, with an interception.
McVay told the media that Goff’s surgery could allow him to return “potentially a week from now” in time for the playoffs.
“It’s not significant enough that it keeps you out for an elongated period of time,” McVay said. “It’s more about just stabilizing that thing.”
