Lions Wide Receiver Ryan Broyles Lives On $60,000 A Year
Most professional athletes like to live large, but it seems like Detroit Lions wide receiver Ryan Broyles is not one of them. Broyles told ESPN that he lives only $60,000 a year even though the 27 year old has a four year rookie contract worth over $3.6 million. That comes out to a yearly intake of about $900,000 – talk about frugal.
In the report to ESPN, he goes over how he intricately balances his finances and how he is more interested in securing a financial future for himself and his family after his playing career is over.
He said that in his first year in the league, a financial advisor told him to “spend as you would like over the next few months. Figure out your means. Then set a budget, live within it and invest the rest.” And that is exactly what he did.
After living on $60,000 a year, he realized that it was all he needed and started investing the rest. He checks all of his investments daily and is actively trying to increase his savings and earnings, including the NFL’s 401K plan. He also drives to training camps in a rented Ford Focus, even though he has a newly purchased Mazda, as well as his Trailblazer from college.

When asked about if people come to him for financial matters and how it looks to drive in a rental, he said,
“I didn’t hold myself back at all on those terms. That’s what I tell people when they want to start to invest, I tell them to live your life and see where you stand and then pull back. Don’t pull back without even knowing.
When I come to work, I don’t think about the money, man. I can tell you that, without a doubt. There might be some guys that do but I put myself in a position where I come out here and have fun. I don’t have that pressure, you know what I mean. My wife has no worries. My child has no worries. For the most part, I can help my family, you know.”
On his last year of his contract with the Lions due to playing only 11 games in the past two seasons, Broyles seems to be well off.
At his position, Broyles has a career 32 receptions for 420 yards with two touchdowns.
