LeBron James Says He’s ‘Appreciative’ Of Push To Build Statue Of Him In Ohio

There is a movement brewing to honor LeBron James in his hometown of Akron, Ohio, and the King says he is flattered by the idea.

A GoFundMe page has reportedly been set up with a goal of raising $1 million to build a life-size statue of the Cleveland Cavaliers All-Star forward in Akron, where his basketball career started.

“First of all, thank you,” James said on Monday after learning about the movement. “It would be cool, not only for myself, but for my family and all the people that had anything to do with this journey thus far. I’m appreciative even of the thought.”

Aaron Carey, who like James played basketball at a high school in Akron, launched the GoFundMe campaign.

“We want to do this with the fans,” Carey told the Akron Beacon-Journal. “We want fans to be able to thank LeBron for what he has done for Akron and the Cavs.”

Carey also told the Beacon-Journal he has reached out to sculptor Omri Amrany, who has built statues for other NBA legends such as Michael Jordan, Magic Johnson and Shaquille O’Neal.

James, 33, is hoping to reach the NBA Finals for the eighth straight year. The Cavaliers and the Boston Celtics are tied 2-2 in the Eastern Conference Final series. Game 5 is set for Wednesday night at TD Garden.

James, a three-time NBA champion, scored 44 points in Monday’s Game 4 victory, and set a record while doing so. He surpassed Kareem Abdul-Jabbar for competed field goals in the playoffs. James now has  2,368 made postseason field goals.
