Lamar Jackson Wins The MVP, But Continues A Trend Of Award Winners To Not Win The Super Bowl
Baltimore Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson has a football resume that stands out from the rest.
A Heisman Trophy in 2016, three Pro Bowl selections, playoff victories and two NFL MPVs.
The one achievement missing from that list? The most prestigious – a Lombardi Trophy given to the team that wins the Super Bowl.
Jackson and the Ravens will have to wait another year.

On Sunday night, the Kansas City Chiefs dramatically defeated the San Fransisco 49ers, 25-22 in overtime to win Super Bowl LVIII. It also continued a trend of NFL MVPs not making or winning the big game.
Looking back at the past 10 NFL MVP winners, only Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes in 2022 ended up as a champion in the same season as winning the award. Here is the list:
2014: QB Aaron Rodgers, Green Bay Packers (lost in NFC Championship)
2015: QB Cam Newton, Carolina Panthers (lost in Super Bowl 50)
2016: QB Matt Ryan, Atlanta Falcons (lost in Super Bowl LI)
2017: QB Tom Brady, New England Patriots (lost in Super Bowl LII)
2018: QB Patrick Mahomes, Kansas City Chiefs (lost in AFC Championship)
2019: QB Lamar Jackson, Baltimore Ravens (lost in AFC Divisional)
2020: QB Aaron Rodgers, Green Bay Packers (lost in NFC Championship)
2021: QB Aaron Rodgers, Green Bay Packers (lost in NFC Divisional)
2022: QB Patrick Mahomes, Kansas City Chiefs (won Super Bowl LVII)
2023: QB Lamar Jackson, Baltimore Ravens (lost in AFC Championship)
Even more stunning is researching NFL MVPs prior to 2013. Between 2000 and 2013, zero MVPs won the Super Bowl the same year, making Mahomes and former Rams quarterback Kurt Warner the only players in the last 25 seasons to accomplish that feat.
Condolences to the team of the player who wins NFL MVP next season. History is clearly not on your side.
