Konnor Griffin, 19, Makes Stellar Debut For Pittsburgh Pirates

The day has finally come for number one overall prospect Konnor Griffin – he made his big league debut for the Pittsburgh Pirates on Friday at home against the Baltimore Orioles.

Griffin’s MLB debut was utter perfection after driving in a run on his first professional at-bat.

Griffin is the first teenager to make his MLB debut since Juan Soto did it in 2018. Unlike Soto, Griffin made his debut with a new contract extension, signing a nine-year, $140 million deal.

The 19-year-old shortstop will be entering the big leagues with huge expectations, being touted as the “top prospect in baseball” by a mile. Griffin is expected to be a perennial All-Star for the Pirates for years to come.

Griffin joins the Pirates’ young core, which includes NL Cy Young winner Paul Skenes and pitcher Bubba Chandler, as they hope to bring wins and a new sense of hope to Pirates fans.

The Pirates drafted Griffin in the first round of the 2024 MLB Draft with the ninth overall pick. He was selected from Jackson Preparatory School in Mississippi.

In 16 Triple-A at-bats this year, Griffin posted a .428 batting average along with a 1.196 OPS. During his entire minor league career, he has 21 home runs, a .336 batting average, and a .420 on-base percentage.
