Free agent quarterback Nick Foles has agreed to contract terms with the Kansas City Chiefs. Foles would be the backup to 12-year veteran Alex Smith.

Former Kansas City backup quarterback Chase Daniel followed the Chiefs’ offensive coordinator Doug Pederson to the Philadelphia Eagles where Pederson is the new head coach. The other two backups for the Chiefs have not seen any minutes in regular season play. Aaron Murray enters his third season in the league and Tyler Bray enters his fourth season. The Chiefs also have a rookie at the quarterback spot, Kevin Hogan, from Stanford who was selected in the 5th round, 162 overall.

Foles reportedly had interest from the Dallas Cowboys for a backup position after Cowboys current backup Kellen Moore broke his right fibula in training camp practice on Tuesday. According to The Washington Post the Cowboys are now looking to Cleveland Browns’ Josh McCown to fill the spot. The Browns’ might want to be conservative and keep McCown considering Robert Griffin III has not played since 2014.
Kansas City coach Andy Reid was Foles’ first coach in the NFL when he played for the Philadelphia Eagles. When Reid started coaching the Chiefs, Reid was reportedly interested in trading for Foles but Foles stayed with the Eagles and helped them to the 2013 NFC East title. Foles threw 27 touchdown passes and only two interceptions.
The Eagles’ traded Foles to the Rams for the 2015 season for Sam Bradford and Foles signed a 2-year $24 million dollar deal, but the Rams had the number 1 pick in the NFL draft in 2016 and selected star quarterback Jared Goff. Foles struggled with in the 2015 season, losing his starting spot mid-November to Rams backup Case Keenum. Foles could likely see the writing on the wall, top pick, poor previous season and he asked to be released from the team in July.
