Jacksonville Jaguars’ QB Nick Foles Traded To Chicago Bears

On Wednesday, the Chicago Bears turned heads by trading away their fourth-round draft pick to the Jacksonville Jaguars for quarterback Nick Foles.

The Bears traded away their 140 overall pick of this year’s NFL draft to acquire Foles as a new quarterback to put in Chicago’s rotation. This trade also includes Foles restructuring his contract from the lucrative deal he had with Jacksonville last year. He still has three years and $21 million guaranteed left on the deal. However, Foles now has the ability to void the deal after either of the first two years, depending on the upside of his performance.

Nick Foles Stats

With Foles coming to Chicago, the former Super Bowl MVP is going to stir up the depth chart for the Bears as he will fight for the starting quarterback position with quarterback Mitchell Trubisky. The Bears came into the legal tampering period on Monday with the goal of bringing in a veteran quarterback to complete with Trubisky after missing the playoffs eight out the last nine seasons. The second overall pick of the 2017 draft, Trubisky finished the 2019 season 28th in Total QBR (39.4), tied for 27th in touchdown passes (17), 21st in passing yards (3,138), 32nd in yards gained per pass attempt (6.1) and 28th in traditional quarterback rating (83.0). Trubisky had surgery in January to repair a partially torn labrum in his left shoulder but is expected to be ready when training camp opens in July.

Foles has a strong familiarity level between Foles and Chicago’s coaching staff. Bears head coach Matt Nagy coached Foles in both Philadelphia and Kansas City. He has ran the same offense that Nagy is trying to run in Chicago to perfection and won a championship with it. Foles has also been crossed paths with offensive coordinator Bill Lazor, quarterbacks coach John DeFilippo and offensive line coach Juan Castillo during various times with the Eagles. The 31-year-old is also coming off of a shoulder injury from last season but has the resume and stats to become the Bears’ new starting quarterback.
