In a surprise move, J.R. Smith will likely opt out of his Cavaliers contract, according to ESPN’s Chris Broussard.
Now, this is more of a business decision, as J.R. Smith’s choice will force him to forgo $6,399,750. Again, he is probably going to do this in hopes of getting more money, which is a possibility when all things are considered.
First off, very few places are likely to sign Smith to more than $6 million a year. His play is erratic — after having a big opening round, he proved to be nonexistent for the rest of the playoffs, only scoring 11.5 PPG in the NBA Finals — and his temper has gotten him into trouble — just look at the recent elbow he gave Jae Crowder, which got him suspended two games.

At the same time, he may have some leeway with the Cleveland organization. First-year coach David Blatt has said on many occasions how much of an impact Smith has made since his midseason trade from New York: “J.R. Smith has been a dream for us, as a team and for me personally. I love the guy. I love coaching him. He comes to work every single day. He’s a great teammate. He’s playing both ends of the court for us consistently.”
On top of this, he has good chemistry with LeBron James, with the two even highly praising the other person’s play. So in an organization where LeBron’s say is extremely vital, this might force the Cavs to match or increase Smith’s offer.
Simply, he is a great fit for Cleveland in his off-the-bench role, but is that worth more than $6 million a year? Many would say no.
