Honduras international midfielder Arnold Peralta was shot dead in his hometown of La Ceiba on Honduras’ northern coast. The 26-year-old was found in the parking lot of a local shopping center.

Peralta spent a year and a half at the Scottish club Rangers F.C., where he scored one goal in 24 appearances. His contract was terminated by mutual consent in January and he returned to Honduras and began playing for Olimpia. He also appeared 26 times for the senior Honduran team, earning his first cap in 2011.

In 2014, Peralta tweeted about the prevalence of gang violence in his home country. The Spanish tweet translates to “”How difficult it is for our country with so many criminals killing every so often, as though killing was in fashion! These types of people don’t deserve to be alive.” Honduras has one of the highest murder rates in the world.
